The Career Counseling cell is aimed at acting as a single platform to address all the career related requirements of students and professionals. With regularly updated informative articles on CAD/CAM Technology, Career prospects, Industry Applications, and new Technology areas, this section will give an insight into what is happening on the industry front, and how one should proceed to build a career in any of these areas.

This section will give a complete insight into different career areas in each industrial sector.

  • Career Areas in CAD/CAM

    (1) Opportunities exist with the O.E.M - The (Original Equipment Manufacturers) such as Automobile and Consumer Product Giant Companies. Here openings could exist at different levels for design and development to manufacturing. However, more stress is always on Design, Analysis, Research and Development of the product, which is almost always done by the O.E.M . Besides this, certain Manufacturing is also done by the O.E.M so as to utilize their capacity. Most of the time, Complete sub assemblies are offloaded to vendors, where the design is given by the O.E.M and the Manufacture is done by the vendor as per the specifications. The manpower required here is mainly for creation of the design models of the complete product and assemblies. These design models are then passed on to the vendors for further work.

    (2) There are requirements for CAD/CAM skilled engineers with the Vendors to whom these O.E.M Co's offload work, and which take a one point responsibility of specific units of the automobile or consumer product of the O.E.M . These companies need skilled people who can use the data or models given by the O.E.M and use it to execute the entire project. This project may be done fully or partly by them, where some work may be again offloaded to CNC Machine shops, CAM Programmers, Consultants, Mold Makers or Tool rooms. Thus, from here, specific design data has to flow to each of these, so as to achieve the desired output.

    (3) The smaller vendors to whom the above vendors would sub contract their work. These could be :

    (a) Tool rooms, which undertake complete design to manufacture of Moulds of components, from the digital component model given to them.
    (b) Mold Designers who design the molds from digital data input of the component, and associate with CNC Machine shops for the machining work.
    (c) CNC Machine Shops which take in the CNC programs given by the Mold makers or Consultants and give a machined output.
    (d) CAD/CAM Consultants who offer a one point solution by associating with other companies for services such as Digitizing, CAD Modeling, CNC Machining, Prototyping. They undertake projects on Mold design/ Reverse Engineering, Rapid Prototyping etc..

    (4) Opportunities can exist with large Companies, which are into CAD/CAM consultancy services. These companies take up design and development projects from companies abroad, and get it executed from their resources. These projects are normally executed in two ways. Either the project is done in India and output is sent back via the Internet or else the company sends its engineers abroad to complete the project at the customers site.

    (5) A number of vacancies exist with the various educational institutions which offer Training on CAD/CAM . These could be private training institutes or Colleges and research institutions. The requirement here is for Technical and Support personnel. For this, openings exist both in India and abroad.

    (6) There are various types of openings with the companies involved in Marketing and support of CAD/CAM software. Skilled engineers are required at different levels right from Marketing, pre sales and post sales activities, Installation to Training and Technical support. The vacancies here are normally of three types i.e. Pure technical, Techno Marketing and Software Support. The pure technical areas involve Demonstrations/ Benchmarks/ Technical support/ Installation/ Upgrades etc.. Techno Commercial areas involve Pre sales activities/ Post sales support/ Matching Tech. Specifications with requirement etc.. Marketing involves identifying target customers, profiling their technical requirement and offering the most suitable solutions. This required a complete understanding of Engineering requirement and the CAD/CAM/CAE Solution that caters to it. All the three areas are highly dynamic due to a variety in the customers requirements and the High growth dynamic market.

    (7) An Individual can think of starting his own consultancy business by undertaking projects for those companies, who cannot afford to invest in technology resources, but might want to use external services to get the job done. For this, one needs to learn the technology and purchase the necessary resources or associate with others for the same.
